Old pagodas in Bich Dong - Ninh Binh

The three old pagodas on Bich Dong, a grotto located in the Ngu Hanh Son mountain range, in Dam hamlet, Minh Hai commune, Hoa Lu district is particularly interesting. A short boat trip will take tourists to a beautiful landscape with canals meandering between high rocks and grottoes.

In the 18th century King Tu Duc visited Bich Dong. Charmed by the marvelous scenery offered by the mountains, rivers and cliff top pagodas, the King conferred on Bich Dong the title of ‘the Second Most Beautiful Grotto in Vietnam’.

The number one grotto title belongs to Huong Tich Grotto in Ha Tay, Hanoi.

Tam Coc-Bich Dong Tourist Area in Ninh Hai Commune, Hoa Lu District in Ninh Binh Province is a very popular area and in comparison with Tam Coc Grotto, Bich Dong is less popular but it would be a mistake to miss out.

We were keen to visit Bich Dong but we were surprised that there were no monks or Buddhist nuns near the pagoda – we were met instead by some local boat hirers on Hoang Long River. Bich Dong Cave is surrounded by Hoang Long River and features a lot of lotus which sets the area into a romantic and peaceful space.

Along the path to the pagoda, we were amazed by a limestone mountain ahead with a space for many green trees below. On the road are many souvenir vendors waiting for tourists’ curiosity and admiration and cash of course.

Visiting Bich Dong Pagoda, you will have chance to learn about the architecture style as well as the traditional values, which are contained in each construction in the complex. The first destination to be visited is the Ha (Lower) Pagoda, which is situated right at the foot of the mountain. The pagoda features special patterns of roofs. The roofs curve like the tail of phoenix and the remains of traditions and history can be seen on crags, steles, and trees.

The Pagoda worships Tam Bao, Buddha and the three monks Tri Kien, Tri The, Tri Tam – who had great contribution in constructing and upgrading this pagoda.

After visiting Ha Pagoda, you will reach Trung (Middle) Pagoda. The path leading to this pagoda is covered by the shade of huge trees. Trung Pagoda was constructed according to a popular pagoda model. The main presbytery is the Buddha altar with a big calligraphic character, which has the inscription “Linh Son Phat Hoi”. On the right hand side is a path leading to the Toi Grotto (the Dark Grotto). Moving through the 20 steps, tourists will see a copper bell and a bridge where the victims of injustice ask for justice.

It is said that such people who were unjustly treated ring the bell three times, then they will be relieved of their pain. In the French colonial period, this was a place where weapons were produced for Vietnamese patriots.

The stalactites in the Dark Grotto, under the invisible hand of nature, form magical shapes among the gloomy light.

The strange and interesting shapes there have become part of folklore due to the imaginations of local people. The Dark Grotto worships the Buddha and the Mau Thuong Ngan with stalactites shaped like a whale and a turtle’s shell.

Upon getting out of the Dark Grotto, take 30 more steps and tourists will reach the Thuong (Upper) Pagoda (it is also referred to as the East Pagoda since it faces the east). This is the smallest-scale pagoda among the three pagodas mentioned here since it only worships Phat Ba Quan Am. The temples of the God of Mountain and of Land are located at the two sides of the pagoda. From there, you will have a wonderful view of the beautiful landscape, peaceful villages, the beauty of the mountain and forest that nature has blessed the land of Ninh Binh.

The location for this pagoda was chosen in 1428 after two monks were charmed by the view of the river and the mountains. Later, King Le Canh Hung wrote a poem in honor of the beautiful pagoda and landscape.

A Glance of Vietnam

The Park was built by Tran Thi Tuyet Nga who lived and fought against the enemy to protect military bases in the land during the years of fierce war. She said: “When returning to Cu Chi to build a small school to present to local children, I initiated the idea to do some useful things for the land” and after nearly 20 years, “A glimpse of Vietnam” was established as a destination for travelers who want to look into the history, culture, people and craft villages of Vietnam.

Paradise for travelers in Dalat

I departed from the road from Prenn Pass through Truc Lam Zen Monastery, riding around Tuyen Lam Lake then upon the area. The windy and winding road is really interesting to conquer.

‘Da Tien’ (fairy rock) is two rocks in the shape of two male fairies playing chess. The greenness of the pine forest and grass-yards are dotted with some colorful wild flowers.

Tourists can hire a boat to take a cruise around the lake under the sunset to enjoy the romance and calmness of nature. To relax and put fun at the top of your agenda, travelers can hire a fishing rod at VND30,000 with bait to catch some fish for dinner.

For others who want to explore the forest and winding roads, they can hire an elephant at VND30,0000 per hour.

Tourists can stay overnight at a tree-house halfway up a giant tree.

After that you can enjoy some specialties in some long stilt traditional houses of Ede people with gong shows or chat with K’Ho people around the fire. All will make you ignore the darkness coming over the misty city and the chill of the wind.

The amazing thing is that tourists will be taken to a little wooden tree-house halfway up a giant tree to sleep in overnight. You might be a little apprehensive at first but it does have a toilet and bathroom. Lying in the house like a bird cage you will hear the whistles from the wind through the leaves and buzz of insects.

Early morning when you are awakened by the twitters of birds, you should take a visit to Voi Waterfall and stroll around the village to explore more of the ethnic culture there.

The magnificence of Vinh Hy Bay

Vinh Hy is blessed with unique beauty and charm, no matter how often you visit Vinh Hy and the surrounding areas, you will discover a new attraction every time. The Vinh Hy bay located in Vinh Hai village, Ninh Hai district, is 42km from Phan Rang-Thap Cham. Surrounded by white sand beaches, majestic with towering rocky mountains and mysterious caves and poetic with cascading waterfalls creating streams in vast dense forest. Visitors can take some activities such as: dip in the stream water, go fishing, climbing, caving, enjoy clear atmosphere .

Rocks like artworks lie on the way from Vinh Hy Bay to tranquil beaches.

Visitors can choose to take a cruise in the bay to see the coral reefs and the many islands and rocks with their fascinating shapes, like an ear or a turtle, or a hand with fingers stretching to the sky.

But to tourists on their second or third visits tend to opt for the boat voyage to the off-the-beaten-track areas. The original beaches and beautiful rocks will impress even the most seasoned traveler.

There are many beaches to choose for both amateur and strong swimmers, such as Ba Dien (crazy woman), Coc (cup), and Tien (fairy) beaches in the bay, and Thung, Hoi, Binh Tien beaches which slope gently to the sea.

It takes more than an hour to reach these tranquil beaches, but the scenery on the way is breath-taking and the reward once you arrive is gentle waves, breezes blowing in from the sea and the sweet sound of waves lapping against the shore, especially if you are willing to take the 30 minute boat trip to some of the more remote beaches.

A boat driver called My told the Daily that he has transported numerous tours through the walls of high and rocks perched by the sea, all of whom have been overwhelmed by the picturesque beauty of the area.

The waves are constantly crashing against the walls of rocks. Over time the landscape may change as the rocks are transformed by the waves, however the magnificence of Vinh Hy continue to attract visitors from near and far.

Ca Na attracts visitors for its magnificent scenery with clear blue sea covered by white sandy beach and mountain on its back. The clean and cool atmosphere at Ca Na, plus the stunning beach will satisfy even the most demanding tourists.

Ninh Chu is attractive with rows of popla humming in the wind just nearby the beach as if they were whispering to the blue sea and singing about its fine sand dune - the daughter of the sea and sky. You can lie down on the popla leaf carpet, without umbrella or bench, to restfully watch the sky.

The sand is yellowish and clean. The beach features special shape of a crescent, with a very clear and charming sea. The natural beauty of Ninh Chu is not for a hurry trip but carefree one, so as to enjoy the fresh air of the sea area. Entertaining yourself freely in the fresh and blue water, contemplating purple sunset on the long stretching sandal slopes, and the small dreamlike villages near the seaport, will make you feel attached to the nature, blue sky and peaceful clouds and water.

Specially, nearby the beach, there are also Nai pond which is a lot of fish, shrimp, prawn, lobster, craw-fish, cuttle-fish ...etc, Ca Du and Da Chong mountains with different sized rocks piling up, which create a harmonious natural view.

There are not many luxurious hotels and restaurants here, thus Ninh Chu welcomes tourists by its unpretentious heartiness. Suggested accommodation is the simple but tidy and nice hostels, built just nearby in form of communal house, standing harmoniously with nature.

Like other beaches, the popular types of entertainment here are swimming, sailing, diving, fishing, sun-bathing ... etc. What is more here might be the ideal walking trips. From Ninh Chu, tourists can travel to Tri Thuy hamlet, where exists a friendly landscape of sea-view and mountain-view. The mountain is not full of plants or grass, but lots of grayish white rock-gardens with different heights, which are adorned with some small trees. On the mountain side stands some ancient pagodas and scattering small tile-roofed houses. Walking on some steps, you will reach a small wild beach, which is beautiful with green poplar forest and rocks of weird shapes on sand. Should you need a nice quiet space to hide from hasty daily life, this is the ideal selection!

Tourists could save a lot when choosing Ninh Chu beach as a destination for their vacation. The tidy, clean, and fairly good-conditioned hotels and hostels are at cheap prices. In addition, they are mostly nearby the beach, which helps save transportation cost. The food is of quite deliciousness, but at only reasonable prices, and available almost everywhere.
