Mu Cang Chai, gold rice fields

Mu Cang Chai is a rural district of Yen Bai province, in the northeastern region of Vietnam, which is 300 kilometres from Hanoi. Over the past few years, Mu Cang Chai has become a popular destination for tourists, researchers and photographers.

Mu Cang Chai owns 700 hectares of terraced rice fields, with 70 percent at three communes: La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, De Su Phinh. This traditional cultural heritage of an ethnic minority was recognised as a national landscape by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism.

Located in a temperate zone, the average temperature all-year round is 18.5 Celsius degrees so when the sunset comes, the district is blanked in mist and makes tourists feel they are in late winter of the lowland.

Best time to visit here from September to October

The center of Mu Cang Chai District lies in a valley expanding over seven kilometers. September and October is suggested as the most ideal time to visit Mu Cang Chai as everywhere, from magnificent mountains or beautiful terraced rice fields are bathed in glistening rays.

In addition to terraced fields, Mu Cang Chai was blessed with naturally beautiful flora and fauna and outstanding geographic features, including vast mountain ranges with high peaks which have protected the people for an age.

Lying on the southern bank of the An Cuu River in the centre of the former imperial capital of Hue, hat-making village Phu Cam is famous for its traditional way of making conical hats. Since hundreds of years, Hue conical hat has become an integral part of Hue culture.

Phu Cam conical hat or Hue conical hat has not only a beautiful form but also modest color. It is light and so thin that light seems to pierce through it. Through natural light, visitors in Vietnam travel can see Hue landscapes with verses engraved on paper placed between two layers of leaves.

Phu Cam-made hats look graceful, soft and thin as silk. Hue landscapes or even poems can be seen clearly through the hats in the sunshine. It takes woman much time to make the frame and iron leaves before young girls start sewing. The beauty and grace of a hat depend much on the frame (made of 16 brims from the hem to the top). Artisans use sharp knives to prepare the brims and make the frame that needs skills, techniques and experiences, as well as mathematical calculations which have been handed down for generations.

Leaves to make hat play a vital part, leaves have to be blue-white, neither too young nor too old. Collected leaves are to be put to dry in the sun, put to be moistened by dewdrops, and then to be ironed flat on a steel- plank above a kiln, cleaned with a towel. After all this, leaves are cut to fit the frame.

Phu Cam Conical Hat Village

It is not easy to arrange the leaves on to the frame. Each hat needs 50 leaves and between the leaves are colored papers with pictures or paintings of landscapes, or even poems. Hat-makers are hardworking and careful and diligent. Hats are served with silk-threads and the chin-straps are made of colored silk (black, white, yellowish, purple, violet, etc) to harmonize with Hue climate and beauty.

Poem-hat or “Non bai tho” is a distinctive feature of culture in Hue. Locals say they like to do the job not only to earn money but to preserve their age-old tradition as poem-hats have been absorbed into folk music and songs. Today hats are still used by young girls to shade their heads in the sun and to make them look more graceful in the traditional long dress “Ao Dai.”

Therefore, when visiting Phu Cam village, tourists joining tours in Vietnam will have a chance to know more about how to make a Hue conical hat- an integral part of Hue’s culture.

With the height of 43 meters only, the hill is located 7km from Hue centre, with its foot lying next to slowly flowing Perfume River. On the way to Tu Duc Tomb, there's a hill called Vong Canh, which at first seems to be quite normal amongst other famous sightseeing spots of Hue. However, tourists shouldn't miss this spot, for it has been regarded as the best place for visitors in Vietnam tourism to catch a panoramic view of the Perfume River. This can easily be seen from its name: “Vong” means watch, observe; “Canh” means scene.

This area is filled up with royal tombs of not only King Tu Duc but also Dong Khanh's, Thieu Tri's and several Queens'. Combined with the complex of royal monuments is Hon Chen Temple, a place that local people worship YA-Na Goddess and Lieu Hanh Goddess on the opposite site, which makes Vong Canh an ideal place for tourists joining tours in Vietnam to picture an ancient but magnificent Hue city.

In addition, viewers are often seduced by the villages stretching along the river banks: Huong Ho, Hai Cat, Ngoc Ho, etc. with fruit gardens under the shades of pine trees, corn field, small boats silently skimming and then drawing several lines on the tranquil water surface. From sunrise to sunset, the soft-silk-strip Perfume River charms bystanders by the atmosphere that it brings to the life surrounding. Vong Canh Hill overlooks the marvelous and elaborate modifications of the water colors upon various nuances of sunlight and sky.

Vong Canh itself is now covered with pine trees and daisy. Once, there was a purpose-built watching tower on the top of the hill, though only parts of its foundation remain until today. Besides, Water plant Van Nien – which is the oldest in Central Vietnam and an Oriental-styled building designed by a French architecture, just 300m from Vong Canh, is also a visit-worthy destination.

If you are making a tour to Vietnam, and are coming to Vong Canh hill, watch the scene only! Maybe, nothing is to be entertaining but for those who are looking for natural beautiful landscapes and quietness, that ‘s perfect enough.

One person who spent a life waiting becomes the mountain."

Their interference onlymakes the couple more determined to wait for each other. One day, thesound of the flute Coc uses to call for Cong does not reach Cong’sroom. Hopeless for his lover, Coc dies of a broken heart.

Thefairy in the sky feels pity for him and transforms him into a mountainthat stands imposing in the middle of the sky. During all four seasons, the wind blows through the leaves to resound the lover’s flute. Thegirl, detained in her room, cries for her lover all day and night untilone day her body transforms into tears. The tears full of love andloyalty absorb into the soil, and run as currents looking for a way toCoc Mountain. Every year since then, when summer comes, violet sim(violet myrtle flower) flourish on Coc Mountain and on Cong River toremind people of this beautiful love.

Theregion where this legend was born is also known as the Tan Cuongregion, famous for its perfumed tea in Thai Nguyen. It is said thatCong’s tears are absorbed in the tea plant’s roots, creating a lastingsweet flavour that anyone who tastes can remember it forever.
